  • In the US, November is the season of giving thanks. The Dalai Lama puts it this way:

We need to learn how to want what we have, not to have what we want in order to get steady and stable happiness.

This month the IOC team is grateful and appreciating abundance because scholar David Bright has joined the IOC team as our senior scientist leading our new research initiative on human-centered leadership and coaching. We also want to thank IOC sponsor Ace-Up for funding David’s IOC role.

David brings his unique background as an academic, organization development practitioner, and executive coach. He has conducted research on values-based organizations over the past 20 years. David is especially interested in how our ideas of human excellence find their way into our leadership practices. His research on organizational virtues has explored how practices such as compassion, forgiveness, courage, and humility are understood in organizations and in our daily lives.

Over the coming months, David will lead discussions with the IOC community to explore the meaning and significance of Human-Centered Leadership. The first year’s goal is to explore and create a definition and framework for understanding HCL. As the research unfolds, we plan to create coaching tools to help clients become more human-centered as leaders and people. Stay tuned!

In this CoachX Conversation, the Institute's Executive Director, Dr. Jeff Hull, engages in a unique and insightful conversation with the IOC's very own Director of Education, Dr. Pamela Larde. As the author of the soon to be released Joyfully Single, Dr. Larde offers a sneak peek into the four practices of joy, a cornerstone of her Multidimensional Framework of Joy. Venturing beyond the primary theme of singleness as presented in her book, this dialogue centers around how these practices translate into leadership and coaching paradigms. This conversation will provide a rare glimpse into how the interplay of joy, leadership, professional growth are rooted in our wellness and the whole of who we are as human beings....

As humans, we have a natural desire to strive for better and more. When used well, the desire nurtures our potential, fuels our curiosity and creativity, helps us build deeper relationships, and allows us to reach higher levels of self-actualization. However, this is often not the case. In the homes we grow up in, and the societies we live in, many of us become disconnected with our true potential and pursue goals that do not lead to growth or fulfillment. The pandemics of anxiety, burnout and depression are no coincidence. The webinar will help attendees understand the critical component that is essential (and missing) for meaningful pursuits, and learn simple ways to strive from a place of joy, ease and authenticity....

In your executive coaching practice, you most likely keep hearing versions of the same story: the practices and frameworks that our clients learned in business school or from mentors no longer work. Many leaders are frustrated and anxious, wondering why they can’t get their organizations to respond and execute as they once did. Their strategic plans keep getting upended by unforeseen circumstances. They conduct detailed analyses, build consensus, and execute accordingly, only to be disappointed by the results. In surveys, a third of these executives say they’re extremely burnt out....

Healthcare professionals are very engaged despite the extreme stress they face day in and day out. It is no surprise that burnout is on the rise in healthcare professionals, nurses and doctors alike. Burnout is a syndrome of mental and physical exhaustion, mental distance, and reduced professional efficacy, all of which pose a risk to healthcare professionals but more importantly to their patients, as burnout is linked with reduced quality of care. How can we combat burnout and foster engagement? Coaching may be part of the solution. ...
