Mental health challenges are rising dramatically in the wake of the pandemic, calling organizations and coaches to step up and support their workforces. For example, prevalence of depression and anxiety increased 25% during the pandemic (WHO). Articles on the topic are ubiquitous from HBR, Forbes to The Guardian, asking all of us to take this trend seriously and incorporate it into the new leadership paradigm.
Coaches are uniquely suited to encourage conversations on mental health, share their wisdom, and position this worldwide trend as an opportunity for positive growth, not just for individuals, but for leaders and organizations.
Recognizing and navigating this spectrum of issues (from burnout to disorders and everything in between) is challenging. Research, education, and training go a long way to successfully spotting, recognizing and intervening without crossing the line into therapy.
New IOC Course on Mental Health for Coaches
To support you, the IOC is excited to announce an upcoming, asynchronous course designed to help coaches gain knowledge and confidence in mental health. The course roll-out is coming your way soon.
October’s member resources include:
- A special kick-off event for the new course, our Mental Health Literacy Webinar brings together a panel of mental health experts and coaches to share research and case studies, discuss why mental health is so important for today's coaches and ask: what do coaches need to know in domains such as depression, addiction, anxiety and more in order to be effective?
- Natasha Bowman, another expert on mental health issues, joins us for a CoachXConversation on shifting our mindsets around bi-polar disorder and other common mental health concerns.
- Marisca Franco’s webinar will provide the latest research on the importance of workplace relationships and give us tips on how to make friends, an essential component of mental health.
- Will Foussier, CEO of IOC Diamond Sponsor AceUP, speaks about Leadership Excellence and how focusing on the individual is the most effective way to impact positive change in the collective—one person at a time.
- Finally, we kick off our new LIVE seminar series with an intensive on Vertical Leadership Development, a powerful scaffolding for building emotional, internal capacities in a fast-changing world.
Together, we can turn today’s mental health challenges into positive growth for the future. We look forward to supporting all coaches in making a positive impact. As the Hopi elders remind us, “we are the ones we are waiting for.”

Cultural differences of all kinds are often a source of misunderstanding and frustration for both coach and client. In this webinar, we will focus on how to turn cultural differences into a source of richness, both for more effective collaboration and to elevate the coaching process itself. Participants will discover how to improve creativity and impact by going beyond current cultural limitations. Learn about a broad, inclusive and dynamic concept of culture, in contrast to the traditional static and binary view, which perpetuates limiting stereotypes. Participants will discover how the Cultural Orientations Framework (COF) assessment --a roadmap and assessment tool for navigating cultural terrain--can take both individual and team coaching to another level of effectiveness.
