Director's Corner

If you are a member of the IOC, you know that we have many resources, discussion groups, webinars, and events each month. We have many ways for coaches to access scientifically validated learning opportunities.
Yet, here at IOC, we do not feel that any of these resources are our greatest assets. Our greatest asset is our people. The team that helps create this content, the members that support and contribute, the thought leaders that partner with us, and the community that holds up our mission.
This is why we are so excited to announce that our team has grown and we are welcoming two new directors to the IOC. As well as express our gratitude to the years that Dr. Irina Todorova served as the Director of Research. Dr. Todorova has guided the IOC in regard to scientific integrity and research with great skill and knowledge. She will be greatly missed by the entire IOC community.

When a leader’s responsibilities and strengths expand, there is more at stake and further to fall. The strain of the greater risks creates a shadow side, including doubt and anxiety. One moment a leader may feel omnipotent and the next moment, impotent. This internal conflict then expresses in some form of overdrive that can become a derailer, providing an opportunity for mindful self-compassion, insight, self-regulation, and growth.
In this dose, we summarize an article by Erik de Haan (IOC coaching thought leader) titled: The Leadership Shadow: How to Recognize and Avoid Derailment, Hubris, and Overdrive The article, while published in 2016, is even more relevant today during the pandemic era. The stresses and strains of the pandemic have led all of us to get more acquainted with our shadows.

Both coaching and OD are evolving as professional practices. This is primarily due to organizations reaching out to both coaching and OD for help to address the adaptive challenges associated with the uncertainty and volatility of these complex times. However, only recently have members of both practice communities begin to have conversations about how to create value at the individual, group, and organizational level. Marsha will lead a provocative conversation about how coaching and OD may be at an inflection point to redefine their professional identities. She will also invite the exploration of how coaching may be used as an OD intervention to accelerate strategic change in organizations and communities.
