Barbara Fredrickson, PhD

Barbara Fredrickson is Kenan Distinguished Professor and Director of the Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Laboratory (a.k.a. PEP Lab) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she holds appointments in Psychology and the Kenan-Flagler School of Business. She earned her undergraduate degree from Carleton College and her doctorate from Stanford University and has previously held faculty positions at Duke University and the University of Michigan. She has received numerous honors for her research on positive emotions, including the American Psychological Association’s inaugural and highest Templeton Prize in Positive Psychology and the Society for Experimental Social Psychology’s Career Trajectory Award. Her work has also received more than ten consecutive years of research funding from the National Institute of Mental Health. She is co-author of a leading Introductory Psychology textbook, and with the publication of Positivity (Crown, 2009) she has written about her research for general audiences as well.
