  • This month we honor the one-year anniversary of the passing of the much-cited and treasured well-being scientist, Ed Diener. You may want to listen to the wonderful interview with his son, Robert Biswas Diener, hosted by IOC Founder Carol Kauffman at our 2021 conference. They will be back together for an IOC LinkedIn Live soon – stay tuned.

In our IOC research dose this month, we are featuring one of Ed Deiner’s last scientific accomplishments– a comprehensive review of how positive emotions work, at work. In a nutshell:

Positive emotions generate precious resources - they improve thinking, behavior, mood, and physiology, in turn improving self-efficacy, optimism, work engagement, creativity, stress coping and resilience, health, teamwork, relationships, customer satisfaction and leadership. Positive emotions can be directly improved in organizations using practical techniques, leading to enduring resources and upgrading work enjoyment and performance for all.

With the arrival of spring for those of us who live in the northern hemisphere, we are present to more light, new opportunities, and fresh growth. It’s a good moment to spend time reflecting on, for ourselves and our coaching clients, what’s good in our lives, and then unpack, amplify, and appreciate the good feelings. Becoming present and grateful for “what’s working”, we get more of the “juice” offered by positive emotions – for example, more efficacy, optimism, engagement, and creativity. Positive emotions also bring forth mental, emotional, and physical resources that help build our resilience and manage stress.

Even with the positivity of the spring season as our backdrop, we are also awake to the horrific destruction and trauma continuing to unfold for Ukrainians, along with all of the other horrible traumas around the globe that humans inflict on each other. Yet, the undeniable power of positive emotions and hope undergirds the momentum for self-determination that propels Ukrainians, and humans across the world, to keep moving forward – inspiring all of us every day.

Here’s to hunting for the good in our lives and our world, filling our sails and helping us better navigate immense human suffering in our world.

    Warmly,
    The IOC Team

One of the fastest growing forms of coaching in organizations is group coaching. Coaching teams (work team) and/or groups (a group of individuals) is a way for organizations to bring coaching benefits to more employees, expand the repertoire of coaches, and improve engagement, self and social awareness, and social cohesion. While group coaching evidence is limited, there is interesting new research to share.

In this research dose, we summarize a 2022 article written by Anna Sutton in New Zealand and Cecile Crobach in the Netherlands. They conducted a study of a group coaching intervention that demonstrated two important benefits: increased self-awareness and workplace engagement, while pointing to the need for further research.
